Solar Swimming Pool Heater

Swimming pool solar water heater system is one of the simplest and the most economical applications for free sun heat usage that does not require high initial investment, but it provides faster payback than most of other renewable systems.

Extreme Co. heating systems are a great investment for commercial and neighborhood pools. If the pool is now being heated with gas, the complete payback period is typically 12-15 months. If the pool is not currently heated, the installation of our heater will add a great deal of enjoyment for customers, members or residents.

Extreme Co. thermal solar technology is the cost effective way to heat swimming pools, whether they are Olympic size or simply a small domestic pool. Instead of using expensive and inefficient fossil fuel to heat your pool use the natural light of the sun, a free source of energy, which Extreme converts into useful heat.

Our Philosophy

Heating your swimming pool by traditional fossil fuel is very expensive and very wasteful of the planet's resources. Burning gas or oil creates harmful emissions and increases our fuel dependency for sourcing our energy from parts of the world that may not always be stable, friendly or even capable of supplying our fuel needs.

Most swimming pools can be heated using only Extreme solar thermal technology, wherever they are situated. At Extreme we believe that it is important to design our products so that they look good, they are very long lasting and require the minimal amount of maintenance. Quality is the foundation of our philosophy.

We accordingly design pool systems using indirect heat exchange systems, high quality thermal panels that we build ourselves in Europe which we guarantee to perform for ten years. The panels are designed to have a life span of more than 35 years and are made from easily recyclable materials, such as aluminum, copper and glass.

Performance

Pools should be heated to around 28°C. If you heat your pool to any significantly higher temperature algae and bacteria can cause problems unless you increase the chlorine levels significantly. Temperatures lower than about 25°C are uncomfortable for most people. Extreme thermal solar systems provide pool temperatures within the recommended range in most locations without the need to have a boiler system or an electric heating system. These levels of performance are not possible in Northern latitudes in winter, when the daylight hours are short. When your pool system is designed your Extreme approved installer will provide you with an estimate, based on meteorological conditions, of the performance range your system will provide.

How does it work?

Engineered for maximum performance, your heater is scientifically designed with unique “continuous turbulent flow” water channels. This innovative design improves the transformation of solar energy into thermal energy for heating your pool water.
The material used for the Extreme thermal heaters is a specially formulated EPDM  elastomer, which under normal operating conditions will have a useful life of more than 20 years. The Extreme heater becomes virtually a permanent part of your pool, and adds considerable value to your home.

An array of Extreme thermal solar panels is installed on a south facing roof or south facing poolside area. The amount of panels required depends upon the size of the pools and the performance needed. The panels are connected through a sealed circuit to a specially designed chlorine resistant pool heat exchanged. The sealed circuit is filled with an edible glycol solution (in places where below freezing temperatures can be experienced).

When light from the panels strikes the absorber surfaces heat is created. If the pool requires the heat a modulating pump pushes the glycol solution (and the heat it carries) to the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger carries the heat (but not the glycol) to the pool water that is pumped through it. The heat exchange operation is carried out immediately before the pool water is returned into the pool, after it has been filtered.

Provided the temperature at the panels is higher than the temperature in the pool, the heater will heat the pool.

How do the panels look like?

Old fashioned thermal solar panels look ugly; they usually cannot be integrated and if the pool water flows through them they have to be cleaned and descaled and often have a short pool life.

Our panels have been designed to be thin, aesthetically acceptable and yet light enough to be installed on pool side buildings.

What's the payback?

Of course, if you heat your pool by oil or gas, there is no payback. It's all an expense. Pay back varies according to where your pool is, in-door or out-door, is it covered at night, etc,..….Payback can be as low as 18 months.

Things to consider

  • You may need to increase the amount of absorber Panel rolls depending on the size of your swimming pool and the position of the roof where you intend to install the Absorber Panels.
  • Local climate and wind conditions also need to be taken into consideration. Please note that a north facing roof is ideal for solar pool heating systems followed by west then east facing roofs. We do not recommend south facing roofs for solar pool heating.
  • To maximize the effectiveness of the Solar Pool Heating System and enjoy even more swimming time in your pool we recommend you install a Pool Blanket.
  • Please ensure that all reasonable precautions and safety devices are used when installing this product. Identify any potential risks such as power lines and roof pitch before commencing any work on roofs. DO NOT install this product in high winds or rainy conditions.

We don't recommend installation on roofs above a 30 degree pitch.

Boosted Solar Pool Heating System:

As with a basic solar pool heating system you utilize your existing pool installation including your pump and fi liter. There is also a solar controller option to automate the solar pool heating of your swimming pool. The boosted Solar Pool Heating System uses an extra pump to raise the water up to the roof and into the Solar Pool Heating absorber panels and back to the pool via the existing pool return line. This is also called a filtered water system and is an excellent type of system for larger installations above 30 s/mtrs and two floor roofs.

  • Solar Panel Rolls (5 s/mtrs coverage per roll) (F/L3080079)
  • Header kit (24 pcs) (F/L3080080)
  • Valve kit (5 pcs) (F/L3080085)
  • Tile roof straps (80 pcs per carton) (F/L3080083) or,
  • Tin roof straps (4 pcs per carton) (F/L3080084)

Separate Solar Pool Heating System (Independent):

The separate or independent Solar Pool Heating System is designed to operate completely independently from your swimming pool equipment. The independent system can only be installed if you have provisions already in your swimming pool. This would be a separate suction point from the pool and a separate return line for warm water return to the pool. This system also requires a separate Solar Boost Pool Pump.

  • Solar panel rolls (5 s/mtrs coverage per roll) (F/L3080079)
  • Header kit (24 pcs) (F/L3080080)
  • Valve kit (5 pcs) (F/L3080085)
  • Tile roof straps (80 pcs per carton) (F/L3080083)) or,
  • Tin roof straps (4 pcs per carton) (F/L3080084)
  • Solar Boost Pool Pump
  • Solar Pool Controller (optional) (F/L3080087)

Your DIY Solar Absorber Panel Calculator

Calculate how many Rolls of Solar Absorber Panels you will require

  • Measure your pool i.e. 8m Length x 4m width = Pool area 32m2
  • Recommended minimum pool coverage is 70% = 22.4m2
  • Each Solar panel carton contains 1 x roll = 5m2, therefore you require 5 rolls to cover 32m2 pool (70%) minimum coverage.  100% coverage which is ideal would require 7 rolls of solar panel.
  • Solar Absorber Panels are ideally located on North facing roofs, however if this is not practical the North West or West facing roofs are acceptable.
  • It is recommended that the roof should be in a sunny position for a minimum of 5 hours per day. Take into account any shading from trees and other obstructions such as nearby buildings when locating the Solar Absorber Panels.
  • Larger systems need to be considered if the location of your roof doesn’t fully meet the basic system requirements to compensate for lack of direct sunlight or wind.
  • Each Absorber Panel carton contains 1 x 32.24m (L) x 150mm (W) roll = 5m2.

Additional Information

  • One solar header kit is sufficient for most average pool sizes. If a larger system is installed you may require additional headers.
  • You may wish to purchase multipurpose silicon to hold down the Solar Absorber Panel especially in high wind areas. This is in addition to the straps already provided in the kit.
  • You will require UPVC class 9 or 12 pipes, fittings and glue to complete the installation.
  • The valve kit will give you all the valves required to install your Solar Pool Heating System.

Optional Items

  • Solar Boost Swimming Pool Pump
  • Pool Blanket
  • Automatic Solar Controller
  • Repair Kit

Warranty Information - Poseidon Pool & Spa Products

An eight (8) year pro rata warranty is provided on the solar panel rolls. A one year conditional warranty is provided on all other products supplied as part of the solar kits unless otherwise stated in individual product warranty terms and conditions.
